The 10 Most Bummer Moments in Chicago Cubs History |
Chicago sports fans are some of the most dedicated, loyal and snake bit in the world. With the exception of the Bulls teams of the 90's and the one superbowl championship won by the 1985 Chicago Bears, we have not had a lot to cheer about in terms of Chicago Sports Championships during the last 40 years or so. The following is a list of what we consider to be 10 of the most bummer things that have occured or existed in the history of the Chicago Cubs baseball team during their 125 year plus history. You may agree with some and have some of your own. Feel free to send us your thoughts and suggestions and, perhaps, we may incorporate them into our list.
(1) Trading Lou Brock to St. Louis for Ernie Broglio in 1964 ... can you tell me what Ernie Broglio ever did in a Cubs uniform that could have warranted trading the future Hall of Fame all time leading base stealer (before Ricky Henderson broke the record)?
(2) The 1969 collapse in September ... this one hurt for a long long time ... thanx to Leo Durocher for the September burn out swoon ... and a big thanx to Ron Santo for his heel clicking antics and the demoralization of Don Young.
(3) Losing Grover Cleveland Alexander to St. Louis during the 1926 season
(4) Losing Dennis Eckersley to the Oakland Athletics after the 1986 season ... Dennis went on to become one of the premier save artists of all time! Why couldn't we have figured that one out?!
(5) The first night game ... tradition ends ... the next thing that the Tribune Company will do is poison the ivy!
(6) Steve Bartman ... some say he cost them the series ... some say that he really didn't matter ... we say that he represents the disappointment and failure of the 2003 playoffs.
(7) Wrigleyville becoming Yuppieville
(8) Losing Greg Maddux to the Atlanta Braves.
(9) Having not won a World Series since 1908 and not having played in one since 1945
(10) Leon Durham's failure to catch an easy ground ball during the 1984 playoffs against the San Diego Padres which lead to the Padres taking the series after Chicago had gone up in the 5 games series two games to nothing ... all they had to do was win one of the next three games and they would have gone to the World Series.
(11) The 2005 Chicago White Sox World Series Championship!!! |
